The purpose of IWT is to operate as a strategic intellectual think tank that generates ideas, research, and analysis to influence policy and public opinion on a variety of issues: 

• Research: IWT conducts research and produce reports, monographs, and policy briefs on a range of topics. 

• Analysis: IWT provides analysis and solutions to complex issues. 

• Policy recommendations: IWT formulates evidence-based policy recommendations from reliable data. 

• Public debate: IWT provoke public debate on critical issues. 

• Education: IWT educates the public on issue impacting the Black community.
